As a solo artist and sound engineer, Toobe Fresco has worked in countless recording environments across the region. His experiences have shown him what makes a recording studio great as well as the constraints that get in the way of creativity. Toobe believes artists need an atmosphere that is conducive to their goals regardless of genre, experience, or income. It’s this realization that inspired him to pause his own career and launch Breakthrough Sounds.
Located in the city of Bedford, this newly opened space is intended to provide artists with affordable service that doesn’t sacrifice quality or professionalism. The price to record starts at just $35 per hour- an amount that is locked in whether you’re tracking vocals or a full 9 piece band. It’s a competitive rate for artists who typically pay twice that cost to fund their passion. Breakthrough offers full track mixes, mastering, and production. It also provides photo and video service through its partner TKBL Productions making it a one-stop shop for music artists.
Breakthrough Sounds is the result of a vision to create a versatile and welcoming workspace. The studio needed to be a place where a rapper could escape their basement and a gospel artist could record worship music without the smell of weed in the air. It’s a big and open space that allows artists to feel comfortable and get in the zone while creating. The location gives artists a chance to slow down, reset, and escape the distractions of fast-paced city life.
Kyle Ringer is one of the engineers currently working out of Breakthrough. Building a reputation in the gospel scene, he has worked and collaborated with a growing list of known and rising musicians. Kyle believes what sets the studio apart is a combo of down to earth people and professional-grade recording. As artists themselves, the team understands music and can cater to the full vision of their clients.
“As a producer and engineer, it’s up to me to bring out all of the potential in a record.” explains Kyle, “The artist may plant the seed but it’s up to us to water the soil and give it life.”
The process he describes is made possible through a hybrid-studio composed of analog and digital gear. Breakthrough carries equipment from brands like Yamaha, Neumann, AKG and more. Offering a wide range of options was prioritized in order to produce sounds that could complement everyone’s work. In the hands of people like Kyle, these tools will empower artists.
Toobe maintains that the studio wouldn’t exist today without the help of a dedicated team- his girlfriend and friends. It was through them that he found a go-to source of guidance and encouragement. Out of a dozen different hands who played a role in this project, only one had past experience managing anything like it. However, this didn’t stop Toobe and his team from learning how to soundproof walls or figure out electrical wiring. These achievements demonstrate that faith and a willingness to find out what you’re capable of can go a long way.
“When I first started planning in 2016, I had no funds or knowledge for this but we were able to secure both of those things.” says Toobe, “God made that possible."
It didn’t come without sacrifice. Before setting out to create the studio, Toobe was focused on a promising solo career. His EP titled “Never Better” is a shining example of his lyricism, energy, and soulful production. It was this momentum that Toobe set aside for something bigger than himself- a chance to provide artists with knowledge and influence their sounds. It’s a theme that is central to the idea of Breakthrough, a name suggested by Toobe’s girlfriend and inspired by one of his songs. The space exists for artists to make breakthroughs in music and themselves.
Breakthrough Sounds opened its doors after a soft launch in June but we can expect a larger grand opening to be announced in the near future. With the studio officially here, a new journey awaits Toobe and his team. It is the continuation and cultivation of a greater plan. When asked to describe what helped him bring that vision to life, Toobe points to Jeremiah 29:11.
“After hearing that, it wasn't a question about what I had to do.”
